NDS 555 Self-fastening backing pad for SCM discs

Non-woven web discs always require a backing pad for self-fastening discs the NDS 555 by Klingspor

Abrasives are categorised by their intended application and by their materials for which they are ideally used, but also by the material of their backing, their bonding agent and their grain. Also of significant importance is the coating of the grain. Another aspect to consider is the question of whether the abrasive is designed for aggressive sanding or better suited for finishing work, whether it has a long service life and whether its designed for industrial purposes or for private use at home. For all abrasives, however, it is crucial how easy they are to handle. At the top of the comfort handling are non-woven web discs. Since they are self-fastening, these discs can be changed in seconds without the need for any tools. Non-woven web discs are primarily used in combination with:

  • random orbital sanders and
  • angle grinders.

The NDS 555 backing pad for self-fastening discs is required for angle grinders

Both random orbital sanders and angle grinders need to be used with a special backing pad, a so-called backing pad for self-fastening discs. Designed for angle grinders, NDS 555 backing pad for self-fastening discs comes with a threaded mount that has a internal thread diameter of 14 mm. It features a continuous hook and loop surface on the operating side. This surface keeps the non-woven web disc precisely and securely in place. The NDS 555 backing pad for self-fastening discs is generally suitable for all applications, but it is recommended especially for medium-duty sanding as well as for polishing and surface finishing.

Fitting a non-woven web disc properly

Attaching a non-woven web disc to the angle grinder requires more attention. Since angle grinders often operate at high rotational speed, the non-woven web disc must be attached in the centre of the backing pad with nearly 100 % accuracy. The slightest deviations will cause unbalance – in the best case scenario, this out of balance may merely translate to annoying vibrations, but it can also, at worst, cause damage to the abrasive. The NDS 555 backing pad for self-fastening discs is available in diameters of 115 mm and 125 mm, matching the diameters of non-woven web disc with the same size.
